  • Carver M-4.0t TFM-45 TFM-42 Restore and upgrades

       (2 reviews)

Note: The Carver M4.0t, TFM-4.0t, TFM-45 and TFM-42 are all the same amplifier with only minor variations for display and chassis.

The restore for the Carver M-4.0t amp and its kin includes replacement of all consumable parts with high quality audio grade components, replacement of vital thermal isolators on output stage, upgrade of power supply rectifiers, upgraded input wiring to noise rejecting premium microphone cables, reflow of questionable solder, all service bulletins, any needed repairs* and cleaning inside and out. The restore includes extensive work involving the power supply and signal path:

    • The high voltage rail capacitance is significantly increased with a low ESR array to greatly improve transient response. Long-life, audio grade Nichicon capacitors are installed for the low voltage rails.
    • The old ceramic and polyester capacitors are removed from the signal path and replaced with modern film type.
    • Critical resistors are replaced and upgraded with high quality metal film.
    • The transfer function is meticulously calibrated to the originally intended response for a smooth, accurate and musical experience.

As a result, amplifier's noise floor and power are much improved, and it's longevity extended for decades. We do not just perform a simple 'recap' like most others. Many techs and DIYers are not aware of the intricate service bulletins and updates which are necessary to make these amps perform at the very best. Flippers on Ebay may offer a good deal, but you're not getting what you really expect. All they do is replace some capacitors and if the unit powers up, they list it.

The mkII upgrade is now available for these units! See below for details.

The 'audiophile' restore option. The amp is upgraded on many levels. New speaker posts, IEC socket, new premium wiring, new LEDs (if applicable), signal path upgraded, power supply upgraded, fully restored and cleaned. The result is an amplifier that performs better than factory with upgrades it should have always had to run with a truly advanced system in terms of quality and presentation.

After shipping my M-4.0t and CT-7 preamp, I decided to go with the audiophile restoration instead of the basic restoration.  The work is beautiful, and I will be a while getting used to the smooth, quiet, powerful sound that comes out of this restored combination.  Even with hearing damaged from age, military service, and a career in restoration carpentry, I can hear wonderfully.  For the first time, I am leaving the bass, mid-range, and treble controls set flat, and love the sound.  This is money invested, not spent, on some of the best sound that I could ever afford.  I am thankful to have equipment that I love at a price that is a bargain.

Have received M4.0t amp back from having audiphile refurb done-playing it regularly for a couple of months, now and it is superb sounding-have it hooked up to CJ PF-2 preamp and Wharfedale Denton speakers. I have sent in a M1.0t for same work upgrade and should be receiving it back in a week. Plan to send my last M1.0t for the refurb as soon as I am able to. These are true craftsmen at Nelion. Thank you.
